The Casio VL-1, universally known as the VL-Tone, holds a legendary status in the history of electronic music. Released in 1979, this monophonic synthesizer, calculator, and sequencer became an accidental icon. From its distinctive "Da Da Da" rhythm loop to its quirky internal beep, the VL-Tone inspired a generation of musicians.
When consumers opened their VL-1 boxes in the 1980s, they received an instructional manual alongside a dedicated songbook. Because the VL-Tone features a built-in sequencer capable of storing up to 100 notes, the songbook served a dual purpose: teaching users how to play melodies manually and teaching them how to program the sequencer.
