While robust, IDML is not perfect. Complex interactive elements (e.g., buttons, media, animation from InDesign’s digital publishing tools) may be flattened or lost. Advanced transparency effects or certain paragraph shading options introduced in very recent versions may render unexpectedly. Always proofread the re-opened document carefully. Furthermore, IDML does not preserve the document’s undo history or preflight profiles.
Older versions of InDesign simply do not know how to interpret features that were invented after they were released. When you open a converted file in an older version, "the content created using features specific to a particular version is sometimes modified or omitted."
A dialog box will appear stating the file was created in a newer version. Click the "Convert" button.

To open a file created in a newer version of InDesign on an older version of the software, you must use a specific interchange format called (InDesign Markup Language).
You simply drag and drop the newer .indd file into the IDMarkz interface. The software generates a preview and allows you to export it directly into an IDML file, which you can then open in any version of InDesign down to CS4.
Select (or press Cmd + E on Mac / Ctrl + E on Windows). Open the Format dropdown menu. Select InDesign Markup (IDML) . Click Save . While robust, IDML is not perfect

When exporting to IDML, if your document has features that aren't compatible, InDesign will often give you a warning. Pay attention to these!
