The Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) is the national exam taken by students at the end of Standard Seven. It serves as the secondary school entrance exam, and passing is a prerequisite for a student to receive a primary school certificate and to be eligible to attend public secondary school in Tanzania. By 2005, Tanzania was in the midst of implementing its Primary Education Development Plan (PEDP), a major initiative launched in 2002 to improve access to and quality of primary education across the country.
